In poker, a tournament is a structured competition where players pay a buy-in (entry fee) to receive a fixed amount of chips and play until one person has all the chips. Unlike cash games, tournament chips don’t have real money value—you can’t cash them out during the game. The prize pool comes from all the buy-ins and is distributed to the top finishers, often with the biggest share going to first place.
As players are eliminated, the field shrinks until there’s a winner. Most tournaments follow a rising blind structure, meaning the blinds (forced bets) increase at regular intervals to keep the action going and prevent the game from dragging on forever.
