Straight Flush Definition

A Straight Flush is one of the strongest hands in poker. It means you have five cards in a row (a straight) that are also all the same suit (a flush). For example, 5♠ 6♠ 7♠ 8♠ 9♠ is a straight flush in spades.

In standard poker hand rankings, the Straight Flush is second only to a Royal Flush, which is the highest possible straight flush (10-J-Q-K-A of the same suit). If two players have straight flushes, the one with the highest top card wins. For example, a 9-high straight flush beats a 7-high straight flush.

Examples of Where the Straight Flush Is Used

  • In a game of Texas Hold’em, a player might flop 6♥ 7♥ 8♥ when holding 5♥ 9♥, completing a 5–9 straight flush.
  • In tournaments, hitting a straight flush often wins a big pot, sometimes even earning a bonus or a jackpot in casino promotions.
  • You’ll hear phrases like, “He hit a straight flush on the river!” meaning the player completed that powerful hand on the final card.

Straight flushes are rare and exciting—they don’t happen often, but when they do, they usually win the hand.
