Satellite Definition

A satellite in poker is a qualifying tournament where instead of winning money, you win a seat into a bigger tournament—usually one with a much higher buy-in.

It’s a way for players to turn a small investment into a chance at a major event. For example, you might pay $50 to enter a satellite, and if you win, you get a $10,000 Main Event seat. Some satellites also award multiple seats or include travel packages.

Satellites are especially popular online and are how many players qualify for major series like the WSOP, WPT, or EPT.

Examples of Where Satellite Is Used

  • You play a $100 satellite and finish in the top 2. You win a $1,500 seat into a live event.
  • Poker sites run step satellites, where you can move up through levels—from $5 to $50 to $500 to a full event buy-in.
  • Many pros, including Chris Moneymaker, famously turned a satellite win into a major tournament victory.
