Dead Man’s Hand Definition

The Dead Man’s Hand is a legendary poker hand made up of two black Aces and two black Eights—usually with an unknown fifth card. It’s named after the hand that Wild Bill Hickok was reportedly holding when he was shot and killed during a poker game in 1876.

While it’s not a particularly rare or powerful hand by poker standards (it’s just two pair), the Dead Man’s Hand has become iconic thanks to its connection with the Old West and the story behind it. Today, it’s more of a historical and cultural reference than a strategic concept.
