A continuation bet (often called a c-bet) is when the preflop raiser makes a bet on the flop, regardless of whether their hand improved. It’s called a “continuation” because it continues the story of strength the player started before the flop.
C-bets work well because the preflop raiser often has the strongest range, and the flop will miss both players much of the time. So, betting again puts pressure on opponents and can win pots even without a strong hand.
Good players use continuation bets both for value (with strong hands) and as bluffs (with air or draws), depending on the flop texture and opponent tendencies.
