In poker, the Button—often shortened to BTN—is a special position at the table that marks the dealer position for that hand. It rotates clockwise around the table after every hand. Even though players don’t actually deal the cards in most games, the Button still plays a big role in how the hand is played.
The Button is considered the best position in poker because the player on the Button acts last on all post-flop streets (after the flop, turn, and river). This means they get to see what everyone else does before making their decision, which is a huge advantage.
The Button also posts no blinds, unlike the two players to the left—the small blind (SB) and big blind (BB)—who have to put in forced bets before the cards are dealt.
Players often track who has the Button each hand because it changes the dynamics of betting and decision-making. Knowing how to play from the Button—and how to defend against Button raises—is a key part of poker strategy.
