Bet Sizing Definition

Bet sizing in poker refers to the amount of chips you choose to bet during any betting round. It’s one of the most important elements of poker strategy because your bet size affects how opponents react—whether they fold, call, or raise.

Good bet sizing is about maximizing value, protecting your hand, or bluffing effectively. Whether you’re betting for value or as a bluff, the size of your bet should fit the situation, the board, your hand strength, and your opponent’s tendencies.

There’s no one-size-fits-all. Sometimes you bet small (like 25–50% of the pot) to control the action, and other times you bet big (like 75–100% or more) to apply pressure or build a big pot.

Examples of Where Bet Sizing Is Used

  • You flop a strong hand and bet half the pot to build value without scaring opponents off.
  • On a dry board (with few draws), you might bet small to get called by worse hands.
  • On a draw-heavy board, you might bet big to charge drawing hands or discourage them from continuing.
