Definition of Gutshot

Gutshot in poker is a colloquial name for a type of draw that needs one specific card to complete a straight. The required card sits inside the structure, that’s why gutshot draw is also often referred to as insight straight draw. A gutshot draw can occur in Texas Hold’em, Omaha, Stud, and various other poker games.

Examples of Using Gutshot

If you are holding an 8 and a 10, and the flop on the board is a 6, a 7, and a King, you now have a gutshot draw because you need a 9 to complete your straight. 

Gutshot, or an inside straight draw, is not the same as an open-ended straight draw. In case of an open-ended straight draw, you have two options to hit a straight. For example, you are holding a 4 and a 5, and the flop comes with a 6, a 7, and an ace. In this case, you have two opportunities to complete a straight — either by hitting a 3 or an 8. 

Strategic Considerations

Adjustments to your strategy around a gutshot will depend on the type of poker you are playing, but below are some of the things to consider:

1. Two card gutshots are better than one card gutshots in Texas Hold’em. Two card gutshots are formed using both hole cards. Correspondingly, a one card gutshot only uses one hole card. Two card gutshots are less obvious for your opponents when they hit.
2. In Draw and Stud poker games, consider the absolute strength of your straight. The higher the top card in the straight, the more value the draw holds.
3. The odds of completing a gutshot straight draw are rather low, as it relies on drawing one specific card. Your decision of whether to chase it should depend on various aspects, including the size of the pot and your opponents’ style of playing.
