Cowboys is a popular poker nickname for pocket kings—a starting hand made up of two kings (K♠ K♦, for example). It’s one of the strongest starting hands in Texas Hold’em, second only to pocket aces.
The term “Cowboys” comes from the “K” for king and the tough, dominant image of cowboys in pop culture. When you’re dealt Cowboys, you’re usually in great shape pre-flop—but they’re not invincible, especially against an opponent holding pocket aces or when scary overcards (like an ace) hit the board.
Cowboys are a premium hand, and most players will happily go all-in pre-flop with them. Just don’t fall too in love—they can still get outdrawn!
