A chip leader in poker is the player who has the most chips at any given point in a tournament. They’re on top of the leaderboard and often in a position to apply maximum pressure on shorter stacks.
Being the chip leader gives you a strategic edge. You can play more aggressively, force opponents into tough decisions, and leverage your stack to steal blinds or win pots without going to showdown. But it also comes with responsibility—getting reckless can lead to fast reversals.
Chip leads can shift often, especially in big-field tournaments, but being the chip leader near the bubble (money cutoff) or final table is a huge advantage.
