A burn card is a card that the dealer removes from the top of the deck and sets aside face down before dealing each round of community cards. This happens in most poker games—especially Texas Hold’em and Omaha—to help prevent cheating or card tracking.
The purpose of the burn card is to make it harder for players to know or guess which card is coming next. It’s called a “burn” because the card is essentially “burned” from play—never used or seen during the hand.
While burn cards are mostly a dealer’s responsibility, understanding the concept helps players follow the flow of the game—and avoid confusion when a card is mistakenly exposed or skipped.
