In poker, a combination (often called a combo) refers to one specific way a hand can be made using certain cards. It helps players count how many possible hands an opponent could have, based on the cards they’ve seen and the betting action.
For example, there are six combinations of pocket aces (A♠ A♦, A♠ A♥, A♠ A♣, A♦ A♥, A♦ A♣, A♥ A♣) since suits don’t affect hand rank. If you hold one ace, only three combos of pocket aces remain.
Combo counting is part of hand reading and range analysis, helping advanced players figure out how likely it is that an opponent has a certain hand.
