In poker, setup has two main meanings—one casual, one technical:

Casual Use – A Brutal Clash of Big Hands
A setup happens when two players are dealt strong hands that naturally lead to a big collision, often with one getting crushed. Think pocket kings running into pocket aces, or top full house losing to quads. Neither player really made a mistake—it was just unavoidable based on the cards.
Technical Use – A Deck or Card Setup
In a more technical or cheating context, “setup” can mean a deck that’s been pre-arranged or tampered with to favor a certain player. This is rare and unethical, and any hint of this kind of setup is taken very seriously in professional games.

In most poker talk, though, “setup” refers to the first meaning—a tough-luck situation where you ran into the one hand that had you beat.

Examples of Where “Setup” Is Used

In a bad beat story: “I had kings, he had aces—total setup.”
In commentary: “That’s a brutal setup—both players flopped monsters.”
In cheating talk: “They caught a guy using a marked deck and a setup in a private game.”

So whether it’s bad luck or shady dealing, setups are either the most painful part of poker or the most suspicious—depending on the context.
