Joker Definition

A Joker is a special wild card sometimes used in certain poker variants, but it’s not part of standard poker rules like Texas Hold’em or Omaha. In games that include it, the Joker can stand in for any other card, making it easier to make strong hands like straights, flushes, or even five-of-a-kind.

Some home games or casino variants use one Joker as a wild card, while others limit it to being a “bug”—a semi-wild card that can only complete straights, flushes, or act as an Ace.

Jokers are not used in serious tournament or cash play, but they’re common in home games, video poker, or wild card formats like Five Card Draw with Jokers.

Examples of Where Joker Is Used

  • In a home game of Five Card Draw, you’re dealt 8♣ 8♦ J♠ Joker 2♠—you use the Joker as an 8 to make three of a kind.
  • In Joker Poker (a video poker variant), the Joker is wild and can complete five-of-a-kind, the highest hand in that game.
  • Casinos rarely allow Jokers in live poker rooms, but they may be used in fun or promotional formats.
