In poker, a float is when a player calls a bet with a weak or marginal hand, not because they think they’re ahead, but because they plan to bluff or take the pot away later—usually on the next street.
Floats are most often done in position, after the flop. The idea is to call a continuation bet (a bet by the preflop raiser) and then bet or raise on the turn if your opponent shows weakness. You’re using the call to “set up” a bluff—floating through one street to strike on the next.
It’s a clever and aggressive move, but it only works well if your opponent is capable of folding and you’re reading the situation right.
