The river is the fifth and final community card dealt face up on the board in poker games like Texas Hold’em and Omaha. It comes after the flop (3 cards) and turn (4th card), and is followed by the last round of betting.
Once the river is dealt, all available cards are on the table—so players now know the best possible hands are out there. The river can complete a draw, change the winner, or lock in a victory. It’s often the most dramatic moment of the hand.
Because there are no more cards to come, decisions on the river are final—players either fold, call, raise, or go to showdown.
