Stakes determine the level of risk, the potential reward, and often the skill level of players in the game. In cash games, stakes are shown as blind sizes (e.g., $1/$2). In tournaments, the stake is the buy-in amount (e.g., $100 tournament = $100 stake).
The term is also used when talking about staking—where one player backs another financially, usually in exchange for a share of their winnings.
