Counterfeit Definition

In poker, counterfeit happens when community cards weaken your hand by duplicating one of your cards, making it less valuable—or even useless.

This most often comes up with two-pair hands or low pairs in games like Texas Hold’em. If the board pairs or matches your kicker (the side card used to break ties), your advantage can vanish. You still technically have a hand, but now other players may beat you with the same cards or better kickers.

It’s called “counterfeit” because your strong hand gets “faked out” by the board—it looks good, but it no longer holds its original value.

Examples of Where Counterfeit Is Used

  • You have 4♠ 5♠ and the board is 4♦ 8♣ 9♥ — you have a pair of fours.
  • Then the turn and river come 8♥ and 9♠. Now the board pairs both the 8 and the 9. Your 4 is counterfeited—anyone with a higher kicker than your 5 wins.
  • In lowball games (like Omaha Hi-Lo), a small pair can get counterfeited by community cards that lower your chances of winning the “low” pot.
