A side pot is a separate pot that’s created when one or more players go all-in, but other players still have chips left to bet. Since an all-in player can only win the amount they contributed, any extra bets go into a side pot that they’re not eligible to win.
This happens most often in tournament play or deep-stacked cash games, where players have different chip stacks.
