Ajax Definition

In poker slang, “Ajax” is a nickname for the starting hand Ace-Jack (A♠ J♣, A♥ J♦, etc.). It’s a play on the sound of the letters “A” and “J” said together—A-J = Ajax.

Ace-Jack is a strong but tricky hand. It looks great preflop, especially in late position, but it can get into trouble against better hands like Ace-Queen, Ace-King, or pocket pairs. That’s why experienced players are often cautious with Ajax unless the situation is right.

Examples of Where Ajax Is Used

  • A player says, “I had Ajax and raised on the button,” meaning they opened with Ace-Jack from a late position.
  • In a showdown, one player flips over Ajax, and another jokes, “Watch out, it cleans up the table!”
  • A coach might say, “Don’t overplay Ajax early in a tournament—it’s good, but not a monster.”

Ajax is a fun nickname, but the hand needs smart play. It can win big—just not against everything.
