High-Low (also called Hi-Lo or Split Pot) is a poker variant where the pot is split between the best high hand and the best qualifying low hand. It adds an extra layer of strategy because players are trying to win either the high, the low, or ideally both—which is called “scooping.”
To qualify for the low side of the pot, a hand usually must have five unpaired cards ranked 8 or lower (this is called “8 or better”). Aces are low for the low hand, so the best possible low is A-2-3-4-5, which is also a straight.
The most popular High-Low game is Omaha Hi-Lo, but there are also versions like Seven-Card Stud Hi-Lo.
High-Low games are great for players who like deeper strategy, more action, and the chance to win even with unusual hands.
