Rebuy Definition

Rebuy is the offer for a poker player to purchase additional chips in a game or a tournament after losing part or all of the chips.

This is a common possibility in tournaments and cash games. It provides an opportunity to play again without immediate elimination. 

Examples of Where Rebuy is Used in Poker

Rebuy in poker is usually available in cash games and many tournament structures.

• In Cash Games – players can generally rebuy chips when they’re not involved in a hand. The rebuy is capped at the maximum buy-in limit assigned to the table. Thus, players can maintain a solid stack and go at it again.
• Rebuy Tournaments – in tournaments, there’s usually a designated rebuy period. More often than not, it’s available in earlier stages, with no chance for a rebuy in the final table or late scenarios. When a player’s chips fall below a designated threshold, or they lose it all, they can initiate a rebuy until the freezeout format begins. 

Strategic Considerations

It’s pretty common to do a rebuy in games or tournaments when there’s a possibility. However, you need to understand the strategic implications of doing so.

Everyone needs to manage their bank when doing a rebuy. It’s expensive and not always reasonable if you have a budget. Experts recommend allocating funds for an emergency rebuy or even multiple buy-ins. 

If a rebuy is available, it can be wise to play more aggressively and go for it. The ability to rebuy reduces the severity of the punishment when you make a mistake. Even though it isn’t a hall pass to go all out, you could take more calculated risks. 

When the freezeout period approaches, strategies must change accordingly. During this stage, chip preservation becomes super important, and it might be smarter to tough it out with a more conservative strategy.
