In poker, a “nit” is a slang term for an extremely tight and cautious player. This kind of player only plays a very narrow range of strong starting hands (these are called “monster” hands) and folds almost everything else. Nits rarely bluff or take risks, preferring to wait until they believe they hold the best hand. Their ultra-conservative style is sometimes predictable and that may be exploited by a more expert player.
The term “nit” often comes up during poker games or discussions to describe someone’s playing style. In a cash game, if one player folds almost every round and only raises with top cards like AA or KK, others might say “he’s such a nit,” meaning he’s extremely tight and unwilling to gamble.
In a tournament, players might warn each other, “Don’t bother bluffing her, she’s a nit.” In other words, that player only bets when she has a strong hand, so any big bet from her likely means the nuts (the best hand).
When a table has too many nits, the game can feel slow or dull because very few hands are played. Someone might complain that a session is “too nitty” if almost everyone is playing overly cautious and not giving much action.
Clever opponents will quickly recognise a nit and take advantage of their tight approach. Other players may steal a nit’s blinds or make small bluffs, knowing the nit is likely to fold without a very strong hand.
If a nit suddenly shows aggression with a big raise or bet, it’s usually wise to be cautious or fold. A nit almost always has the goods when they play back at you. Understanding that “the nit always has it” can save you from calling with a mediocre hand against someone who only bets with a monster.
If you have a nitty playing style, you should be aware of its limits. At low-stakes games or against inexperienced opponents, playing like a nit will sometimes grind out a modest profit. Less observant players might pay you off when you finally pick up a big hand.
As you move to higher stakes or face skilled competition, good opponents will notice that you only play premium cards and will stop giving you action – or worse, they’ll “bully” you with frequent raises since they expect you to fold anything but the best hands. While a cautious approach can protect your chips in the short run, it often limits your winnings and can be exploited by more expert players.
