Depending on which type of poker you are playing, fourth street can mean one of the two things. In Texas Hold’em, Omaha, or other community games, fourth street, also known as turn, is the fourth community card dealt on the board face up. In Stud games, the fourth street is the fourth card dealt to each player. It is also dealt face up and is preceded and followed by a round of betting.
If the flop consists of a seven plus any other two cards, you hold another seven in your hole cards (first two cards you are dealt), and the fourth street happens to be another seven, you can form a “three of a kind” hand.
The fourth street introduces new possibilities for hand selection. For example, if your third card (the door) and one of the hole cards are both tens, you could have been thinking of forming a pair. But if the fourth street happens to also be a ten, now you have three of a kind, which is higher. Depending on what the fifth street, the sixth street, and the river bring you, you may consider other higher hands (for example, four of a kind).
In both types of poker, the fourth street is followed by a round of betting. It has the potential of improving your hand through completing a possible draw or even creating new possibilities.
This can drastically change the dynamic of the game. In community poker, your strategy will depend on your position, other players’ actions, and the fourth street. In stud games, your main goal is to always stay aware of your cards and identify the best possible hand to continue playing with.
