Tie Definition

A ‘Tie’ happens when 2 or more players at the same poker table hold equal-value hands according to the standard ranking system. 

Ties only occur when no kicker cards are present, and the winner cannot be determined. 

Ties are rare but can happen during tournaments or games. In the case of a poker tie, the pot splits into equal parts depending on how many players are tied. If no kickers are present, the “split pot” is possible with all sorts of hands, including identical pairs, straights, flushes, etc.

Examples of where the Tie is used

Two players show their cards when playing Texas Hold’em, and it turns out they both hold a pair of aces with the same kicker from the community cards. In this case, the croupier or the host must call a tie and split the pot between the players.

The pot is divided even when a flush is formed with the same community cards.

Omaha games can have ties, too. Just as in Texas Hold’em, if 2 or more players form an identical 5-card combination from hole and community cards, they will share the pot.  

In high-stakes tournaments, such tie situations can significantly affect prize distribution and overall strategy.

Strategic Considerations

Even though the chances of a tie are slim, they are greater than zero. This is why experienced players need and will keep this at the back of their minds.

For players, if the likelihood of a tie is high, it may not be worth it to bet aggressively. Why? That’s because a win will lead to a split pot instead of a massive gain. 

Perceptive and savvy poker players tend to avoid marginal calls, keeping their chips for situations where advantage can be taken with swifter, more decisive action.
